Easy Sour Cream Tzatziki Sauce

Tzatziki sauce is a staple whenever we are having Mediterranean food in our house, especially when we make falafel or chicken shawarma pitas! Trader Joe’s has a pretty good prepared container of tzatziki; however, when you forget to plan ahead, it’s super easy to make your own tzatziki in a pinch using sour cream.

Why sour cream and not Greek yogurt? Well, simply put, I usually have sour cream on hand and rarely buy Greek yogurt. The flavors of fresh lemon juice and garlic make the sour cream nice and tangy and you won’t even know the difference! You can, of course, use Greek yogurt in this recipe if that’s what you have on hand, or even some creamy labneh cheese.

Check out my recipe for Easy Falafel Pitas to pair with this sour cream tzatziki sauce!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 Persian cucumber (any cucumber will do)
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 tsp dill
  • Salt & pepper

Directions

  1. Thinly slice the Persian cucumber.
  2. Grate the clove of garlic using a microplane or zester (nobody wants a mouthful of raw garlic chunks! Plus, it mixes more evenly this way).
  3. Combine the sour cream, garlic, dill, and juice of the lemon together. Stir in the sliced cucumber.
  4. Season with salt & pepper to taste.

Enjoy!

This can be served immediately or set aside in the fridge to chill for later.

Thinly sliced cucumber for a nice crunch in the tzatziki!

Loved the tzatziki sauce. Five star. When we ordered dinner from our local greek restaurant they forgot to put the tzatziki sauce in the bag. I quickly looked up recipes and was able to use yours because I had all the ingredients (I used an English cucumber). My family liked it better than the one from the restaurant. Thank you.
